Hair Scalp Treatment Aftercare: Day-by-Day Care & What to Avoid

By Four J Aesthetics | October 5, 2026

One of my first-time scalp treatment clients told me they were impressed by the “big difference from before and after, ” after trying “a lot of treatments” that didn’t help nearly as much. To protect results like that, the most important rule is simple: for the first 24 to 48 hours, don’t wash your hair and avoid heavy sweating, sun, and pools or ocean water. Your scalp needs quiet time to settle so dryness, dandruff, or oiliness doesn’t bounce right back.

Scalp Treatment Aftercare: Day-by-Day Care & What to Avoid image

I’m Jojo, and I run Four J Aesthetics in Old Monterey, also known as Downtown Monterey, near the historic Monterey city center and the Abrego Street business corridor. Our Scalp Treatment is 60 minutes and $85, and it’s built to support healthier hair by caring for the skin your hair grows from. If you work around Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf, or the Monterey Conference Center, aftercare matters even more because sweat and salt air can sneak up on you fast.

Your first 24 to 48 hours: keep the scalp calm (this is the make-or-break window)

Right after a hair scalp treatment, your scalp is clean and freshly conditioned. That’s great, but it also means it can be a little more reactive. Here’s what I generally recommend in Monterey for the first 1 to 2 days.

Do: keep your scalp dry, keep your hands off, and sleep on a clean pillowcase if you can. If you need to brush or style, go gentle and avoid tugging at the roots.

  • No washing: hold off on shampooing for 24 to 48 hours, even if you’re tempted.
  • No heavy sweating: skip hard workouts, hot yoga, saunas, and anything that leaves your scalp drenched. Sweat can sting and re-irritate dryness or flaking.
  • No pools, ocean, or hot tubs: chlorine and saltwater can undo the comfort you just paid for.
  • Limit heat tools: if you must blow-dry, use a cooler setting and keep the airflow moving. Don’t press hot tools right at the scalp.

If you’re in hospitality, military-connected work, or you’re traveling in from Seaside or Del Rey Oaks, plan your appointment so you’re not rushing back into a sweaty shift right after. A quieter part of the day can make aftercare a lot easier.

Days 3 to 7: the “don’t undo it” week (sun, sweat, and product mistakes)

This is the week when people usually start noticing that their scalp feels different. One client loved seeing “before-and-after pictures of my scalp” because the change was that obvious. Aftercare is what keeps that progress going instead of sliding backward.

Sun and Monterey coastal air still count

Monterey can feel cool, especially in the mornings, but ocean spray and wind can still dry out or irritate a healing scalp. For at least a week, protect your part line and any exposed scalp. A loose hat is usually the easiest option. If you want to use scalp sunscreen, let me know and we’ll talk timing and what won’t sting.

Avoid these common slip-ups

  • Picking or scratching at flakes. It’s tempting, but it can create more irritation and keep the cycle going.
  • Using strongly fragranced sprays, alcohol-based tonics, or “minty” products that tingle. That tingle often means irritation.
  • Over-washing. If you tend to get oily, it feels logical to shampoo daily, but stripping too often can trigger more oil or more dryness.

Quick timing note: wait 7 to 14 days before hair color, chemical services, or aggressive scalp exfoliation. If you’re on a schedule, text or call and I’ll help you pick a safe date.

The safe routine: gentle scalp cleanser, calming serum, and less “extra” for 7 days

After your Scalp Treatment, simple wins. I recommend sticking to a gentle, sulfate-free scalp cleanser and a calming scalp serum that I’ve cleared for you. For 5 to 7 days, skip products that are heavy on fragrance or alcohol. Those are common triggers for itching and redness.

A quick word on tea tree scalp products

Tea tree can be helpful for some people, especially if you’re dealing with oil and buildup. But it’s also a common irritant if it’s too strong or used too often. If you want to use a tea tree scalp product, let me know what you have at home first so we don’t accidentally trigger dryness or sensitivity.

And if you’re shopping for a scalp serum for hair growth, keep expectations realistic. A healthy scalp supports better hair quality, and many people notice less flaking, less itch, and hair that feels softer and fuller. True growth changes tend to take time. Consistency is the part that matters.

When you should reach out to me (and when it’s just normal healing)

Most people feel comfortable after a scalp treatment, and many tell me the session itself is deeply relaxing. If you’re a first-timer, a little mild tenderness or light pinkness can happen, especially if your scalp was very dry or flaky to start. That usually settles quickly with gentle care.
