Nervous About Brazilian Waxing Underarms? What to Expect and How to Prepare
By Four J Aesthetics | October 11, 2026
I hear it all the time, "I’m nervous, I’ve never waxed that area." Totally normal. And here’s the reassuring part: people come to see me for a first-time service, feel the difference right away, and then decide it’s going to be their regular thing. One first-time visitor even shared that their before-and-after results were a "truly amazing" change and that they’d "definitely be back". Underarm waxing is quick, usually 10 to 20 minutes, and you walk out smooth immediately.
This guide is for your first arm pit waxing appointment at Four J Aesthetics in Old Monterey, also known as Downtown Monterey, near the historic city center and the Abrego Street business corridor. I’ll walk you through prep, what it feels like, what’s normal after, and the small details that keep irritation down. If you’re coming from Seaside, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, or up Highway 1, it’s an easy stop in your day, even if you’re squeezing it in between shifts.
Prep for underarm waxing in 5 steps (hair length, skin, and timing)
Underarm waxing is one of those services that goes best when you do a few simple things ahead of time. I keep it straightforward and I’ll tell you exactly what matters.
Quick prep checklist: Aim for 1/4 to 1/2 inch of hair, skip shaving for at least 2 weeks, arrive with clean underarms, and plan 24 to 48 hours before an event.
- Hair length: About 1/4 to 1/2 inch is ideal. If it’s much shorter, the wax may not grip well. If it’s longer, that’s okay, it just can feel a little more intense.
- Don’t shave for at least 2 weeks: That gives us enough growth for a clean pull and fewer missed hairs.
- Come with clean, dry skin: Skip heavy lotions and oils on your underarms the day of. Clean skin helps the wax adhere to hair instead of sliding.
- Time it right: If you’ve got a wedding, photos, or a trip to Cannery Row or Fisherman’s Wharf planned, book 24 to 48 hours ahead so any redness has time to calm.
- Tell me what I should know: Let me know if you’re using any medications or skincare products that can make skin more fragile, or if you’re prone to irritation. I’d rather adjust the plan than rush you through.
A lot of my regular Brazilian waxing clients tell me they feel comfortable staying on a schedule, and that same rhythm helps underarm waxing too. Consistency usually means easier sessions and longer-lasting smoothness.
Inside a 25-minute underarm wax: what happens, step by step
My underarm waxing service is scheduled for 25 minutes. That gives us time to do it carefully, not rushed, and still keep it an easy in-and-out appointment. If you’re a first-timer, I’ll explain what I’m doing as we go. People tell me they appreciate that, and that the studio feels calm, warm, and welcoming.
1) We check in first (this is where nerves usually drop)
When you arrive in Old Monterey, we’ll start with quick questions: how your skin reacts, when you last shaved, and if you’ve had irritation with deodorants or fragrances. If you’re nervous, say it out loud. You won’t be the first. I’m known for being easy to talk to, and I keep the vibe comfortable and respectful.
2) Cleanse and prep
I cleanse the underarm area and make sure the skin is dry. This step is simple, but it matters. Underarms can hold moisture, and wax works best when we control that.
3) Wax application and removal (yes, it’s a sharp sensation, and it’s quick)
For waxing underarms with hard wax, I work in small sections so the pull is controlled. You’ll feel a brief, sharp sensation when the wax lifts off. Most people are surprised that the discomfort is short and that the appointment moves fast. Breathing helps a lot. I’ll cue you to take a breath in, then exhale as the wax removes. It sounds simple, but it works.
"What a nice, approachable, and friendly esthetician. I had my first vagacial/wax with her. She made me feel comfortable with a little touch of motherly care."
, a first-time client
4) Clean-up, soothe, and quick check
After the wax on underarm hair is removed, I clean up any residue and apply a calming product. Then we check the skin together. I’ll also go over aftercare in plain language, so you’re not guessing once you’re back out on Munras Avenue or heading home.
After your underarm wax: redness, deodorant, and keeping bumps away
Right after underarm waxing, it’s normal to see mild redness and feel a little warmth. For most people it settles within a few hours, and sometimes it can take up to 48 hours. Smooth results are immediate, but good aftercare keeps the skin calm and helps prevent ingrowns.
First 12 to 24 hours
- Skip deodorant and strong perfumes on the area.
- Avoid heat: hot showers, saunas, hot tubs.
- Wear loose sleeves to reduce friction.
48 to 72 hours later
- Start gentle exfoliation to help prevent ingrown hairs.
- Keep skin clean and moisturized with a simple, non-fragranced product.
- If you’re sensitive, avoid experimenting with new deodorants for a few days.
Plan to avoid heavy exercise, swimming, and anything that traps heat for about 24 hours. Then you’re usually back to normal. If you love the smooth feel, rebooking every 3 to 4 weeks tends to keep the growth softer and easier to remove.
3 confidence tips I give first-timers in Downtown Monterey
These are the little things that make a first wax feel a lot easier. I share them because they work, and because I’d rather you feel prepared than power through it.
1) Book a low-stakes day
If you can, don’t schedule your first underarm wax right before a big event. Give yourself 24 to 48 hours. Then you can grab coffee near the historic city center, take a quick stroll, and let any redness settle without stressing.
2) Don’t tough it out silently
If you need a pause, say so. I work with a lot of people who are new to waxing, including military families and busy professionals who just want something quick and reliable around their schedule. We can slow down for 10 seconds and keep it comfortable.
3) Make it easy to maintain
If you like the result, stay consistent. I have plenty of regulars who come back routinely because they like knowing what they’re getting each visit. Underarms respond well to that routine too.

Underarm waxing FAQs (quick, honest answers)
Do I need to shave before an underarm wax?
No. Please don’t shave right before. I generally recommend you avoid shaving for at least 2 weeks so we have enough hair to wax cleanly.
How long should my underarm hair be for waxing?
Aim for about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. That length helps the wax grip the hair so we don’t have to go over the same area repeatedly.
Will underarm waxing make my skin darker or cause hyperpigmentation?
Underarm waxing doesn’t automatically darken skin. Hyperpigmentation is usually tied to irritation and friction. The best way to reduce the risk is gentle waxing, skipping deodorant and fragrance right after, and avoiding tight sleeves that rub the area.
Can I use deodorant after an underarm wax?
I recommend waiting 12 to 24 hours before applying deodorant, especially if it’s scented or strong. Freshly waxed skin is more reactive, and this one step helps cut down on stinging and bumps.
How long after waxing can I go to the gym or swim?
Give it about 24 hours. Sweat, friction, heat, and pool chemicals can irritate freshly waxed skin. If you can’t avoid it, keep the area as clean and dry as possible afterward.
What do people mean when they search “arm pit waxing”?
It’s simply another way to say underarm waxing. It’s a quick appointment that removes hair from the root so you get smoother skin immediately, usually with longer-lasting results than shaving.
Is hard wax for underarms a good idea?
Hard wax is commonly used on sensitive areas because it adheres to the hair and is often gentler on skin than soft wax. Underarms can be sensitive, so using hard wax and working in small sections usually helps.
Is it normal to see wax on underarm skin after the appointment?
A little residue can happen, but I clean the area and remove leftover wax before you leave. If you ever feel anything after, let me know and I’ll talk you through the easiest way to handle it without irritating your skin.
What’s different about waxing underarms with hard wax?
Hard wax sets on the skin and lifts off without a strip. I apply it in small sections and remove it once it’s ready, which helps keep the service controlled and efficient, especially for first-timers.
